Sluice Box (a reference to El Dorado's gold rush history) is a Rhone varietal white blend of Vermentino, Picpoul, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne. Almost half the blend sees skin contact, which gives it weight and texture, not to mention great minerality.
Like its namesake, this one has lots of layers to sift through. On the nose you’ll find dried white flowers followed by flavors of orange blossom, citrus rind and (call us crazy) yeasty bread dough. With a long, dry finish, great tannins and balanced acid, it’s a gold-plated crowd pleaser.
As a natural winery, Donkey & Goat bottles without filtering or fining, which means this white is hazy and cloudy in the glass. But don’t be dismayed. What you lose in clarity you gain in texture, aroma and flavor thanks to the wild yeasts and neutral wood barrels.
TIP OF THE TONGUE
Patio pound it or serve it at your next dinner party. It goes great with chicken, fish, garlic-and-herb pastas or foods in the spinach-and-artichoke realm. We love it with fish tacos.
