Montana Straight Rye WhiskeyMADE BY ROUGHSTOCK IN BOZEMAN, MONTANA
Rye whiskey here in the U.S. needs to be made from a minimum of 51% rye grain, but to maximize the spicy and earthy flavor, Roughstock uses 100% whole grain rye. This happens to be a much trickier process, but worth it.
Along with a good snap of black pepper, there are hints of toffee, nuts and pumpkin pie spice to make this rich rye whiskey deep and complex.
Montana mountain stream water is used both for fermenting the grain mash and bringing the spirit down to proof, and to add a little more of the taste of the Montana wilds in every glass. And, to earn the name of a straight rye whiskey, every batch ages for a minimum of two years.
Roughstock's distillers proudly make "western-style" whiskeys, rich in flavor and unafraid of a little heat. It's the first distillery to legally produce whiskey in Montana in over 100 years.
This beauty is a must-try for all rye fans.
tip of the tongue
Use it to mix up Roughstock's "Gettin' Old Fashioned" cocktail:
2 oz Roughstock Straight Rye Whiskey
1/2 oz orange liqueur
3 dashes aromatic bitters
1 sugar cube
Place sugar cube in an old fashioned glass. Wet it down with 2 or 3 dashes aromatic bitters and orange liqueur. Muddle together and swirl the glass so that mixture lines the glass. Add ice, pour in the Straight Rye Whiskey and add a splash of club soda. Stir and serve.
