Estate Chardonnay 2013

This California Chardonnay starts with a slight creaminess – almost like sweet butter – and delicate green apple flavor. A little salty minerality makes this white wine great with rich foods.

Most of the grapes are the Old Wente clone of Chardonnay, which provides structure, minerality and notes of citrus. The remaining Rued clone grapes add a much more floral, richer tone to each sip. It all spends 15 months in neutral oak barrels, picking up light oaky vanilla to support the acidic, tart, peppery citrus flavors.

Winemaker Luke Bass has been growing grapes organically and biodynamically for more than a decade, having abandoned environmentally damaging substances like mineral fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. His irrigation system uses renewable rain water that’s collected in a nearby pond, rather than well water. The wines are even bottled in 50% recycled bottles made nearby, and sealed with foils made in the Napa Valley. Cali-forn-i-yay!

tip of the tongue

Serve with an appetizer of goat cheese and crackers, or a heartier seafood stew like Californian cioppino. This would also be excellent with swordfish steaks, grilled in chimichurri.
