Arneis White 2015MADE BY IDLEWILD WINERY IN HEALDSBURG, CALIFORNIA
Only 150 cases of this stunner are produced each year. It has a wonderful bright acidity with aromas of fresh wildflowers, almonds, white peach and tarragon, while the flavor is soft and clean with a tiny salty touch.
This bottle is one of few examples of California-grown Arneis, which is a grape that thrives mostly in the Piedmont region of Italy. Winemaker Sam Bilbro uses grapes grown at Fox Hill Vineyard, where the vines sit on sandy, gravelly, well-drained soils on a north-facing slope, which helps with the heat (much like the Alps do for Piedmont!). Despite California's record-setting draught, Bilbro was thrilled with this wine's depth and richness.
Idlewild is part of the ever-growing Seven Percent Solution, a movement that highlights the 7% of California vineyard acreage that isn't planted to the eight most common grape varieties. Small has never been so big.
Tip of the tongue
Arneis is a fantastic match for fish and seafood, as well as light pasta dishes.
