Westland is making their American Single Malt Whiskey in the heart of the Pacific Northwest (what’s up, Seattle!). It’s a distinctly American whiskey, with a sweet, fruity, rich and grain-focused complexity. All dark chocolate, leather and tobacco, one sip and we’re dreaming of dusty libraries and sitting by the fire.
American Single Malt Whiskey can be defined as whiskey that’s distilled from 100% malted barley by a single distillery within the United States. It’s the American equivalent to single malt Scotch – for centuries, single malt whiskies have been considered solely the domain of Scotland. But now, a new category of single malt is taking root!
Master distiller Matt Hofmann is not only all about single malt, he's also all about the distillery's Pacific Northwest presence. Westland uses locally grown barley, and distills as well as uses barrels made from the region's forests.
This American Single Malt is definitely worthy of a place in this new world.
TIP OF THE TONGUE
We like to enjoy the good stuff straight, but that’s not to say this wouldn’t make any whiskey based cocktail better. Try it in the Mouth Manhattan: Combine 2 ounces American Single Malt Whiskey, ½ ounce Vya Sweet Vermouth and 2 to 3 dashes of Hella Bitter Aromatic Bitters in a mixing glass with lots of ice. Stir well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass or a tumbler with fresh ice. Garnish with a Jack Rudy Cocktail Cherry and a strip of orange zest.
