When bartender Brenton Engel started making his own moonshine enough people loved it to inspire him to do it for real. He started with gin and sought out feedback from other Chicago bartenders to fine-tune his recipe. Without investors, he created a distillery and now has a line of spirits.
Their mission statement: “Across the board, Letherbee spirits are made for “wellness" -- the liquor well, that is. to the uninitiated, that's the rail along a bar where bartenders keep the house brands of spirits. While these are usually the cheap, not very tasty brands, Letherbee is envisioning a bar well-stocked (get it!) with the bartenders' favorites, their go-to, ideal brands. And that's just what Letherbee aims to be.
