Navy Strength Rum

MADE BY LOST SPIRITS DISTILLERY IN SALINAS, CALIFORNIA

MOUTH SAYS...

This is no ordinary rum. And not just because it's extra strong! Head distiller Bryan Alexander Davis goes all out to make this one of the most flavorful rums we've ever tasted.

He starts his Navy Strength Rum* with Grade A molasses (most rums are made from a lower grade), which is fermented with a mix of rotten bananas and yeast. That mixture is called "dunder," and it's a traditional component of Jamaican rum, which creates more concentrated flavors once the mixture is distilled. Lost Spirits' rum ages in Oloroso Sherry-seasoned new American oak, adding even more complexity to the finished liquor.

Bryan first became famous for distilling superb absinthe in Spain, then for moving back to his native California to create tiny runs of spectacular peated whiskeys. His new obsession is making rum, and his new flagship is sure to get people talking about him all over again.

* While not the same as Navy Strength gin, the concept has just as much to do with maritime rations. To save resources, sailors were given watered-down rum (called "grog"), but it still needed to deliver strong and bracing flavors. By adopting the Jamaican process of adding dunder, Lost Spirits is concentrating more and more flavor to produce a rum that won't be weakened by other elements of a cocktail.

tip of the tongue

This rum is the ideal spirit for making any cocktail that calls for dark rum, like a Planter's Punch: Combine 1 1/2 oz rum with 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon sugar and 2 dashes Hella Bitters Aromatic Bitters in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a tall glass, then add ice and top off with seltzer or club soda.

Distilled from Grade A molasses; 68% alcohol by volume; comes in a 750ml bottle.
