Brooklyn Roasting Coffee

Mouth says...

Brooklyn Roasting Company is right around the corner from us in Dumbo, Brooklyn – and worth the trip. They roast an awesome bean and make a truly perfect cup of coffee. Each new coffee goes through a rigorous tasting process before and after the beans are roasted in small batches in the Loring Kestrel 1/2 bag roaster (the most advanced small-scale roaster available). The company is committed to fair trade, organic and sustainable farming.

They say their not coffee snobs, just dedicated coffee lovers who only settle for the best.

We should note that the company just switched over from paper packaging to tin-steel cans. These types of cans are far more easy to recycle than paper since they can be separated out of other materials using industrial magnets. Or you can just keep the cool-looking cans and re-use them yourselves for a whole bunch of fun reasons.

Each reusable 12 oz can is hand-stamped with the date of roasting.

Costa Rica Naranjo

Flavor: "Honeysuckle...sea salt...sugarcane." Our coffee comes from CooproNaranjo, a cooperative of coffee growers in the West Valley region. Cooperative members have access to a shared wet mill and technical assistance from trained agronomists. The cooperative has gone on to implement comprehensive measures to improve coffee quality and production. In addition to educating its members about sustainable farming practices and providing technical agricultural assistance, CooproNarajo helps small farmers to obtain Rainforest Alliance certification. Our Naranjo beans come from four farms in the West Valley region that have obtained this certification.

Ethiopian Yirge Cheffe

Flavor: "Lemon rind curls...cocoa powder...pillow." Yirga cheffe is certified organic, and soils are naturally fertilized with pulp waste left over after the coffee cherries are processed. Coffee is grown at some of the highest altitudes seen in the context of Ethiopian coffee cultivation. Wet processing only after the beans are fully ripe lends a bright, clean acidity to the brew.

Iris Espresso

Flavor: "Maple sugar...plum...cocoa...spice." A sweet, spicy, extremely well-balanced blend of three distinctive beans – Peru, Sumatra, and Ethiopian Sidamo – roasted together in small batches. This coffee is soft and creamy, with a deep russet crema and chocolate-berry flavor and finish.

Peruvian Decaf
Flavor: "Waterwashed...sweet&clean...how can it be?" La Florida Coffee cooperative works hard to preserve ancient forests and delicate soils, and has been certified by the Smithsonian Institute as contributing to the preservation of habitat for migratory birds by growing coffee beneath the old growth tree canopy, predominantly Inga. This is great for the coffee as well as the birds, as shade grown coffee matures more slowly, thus resulting in a harder, denser bean with a brighter cup. It also allows the coffee to develop a rich sweetness since the bean spends more time in contact with the sweet fruit that adheres to it.
